An extraordinary lyrical recital that stages an eclectic musical journey, from the delicate arias of the Italian Baroque and the haunting echoes of romances, to the explosion of life of Spanish rhythms or the solar energy of Neapolitan canzonettas. Protagonists: soprano Cristina Fieraru, with her luminous voice, and super guitarist Maxim Belciug, in the role of orchestra. The program proposes some of the most beautiful scores in the vocal repertoire, such as Dido's lament from Henry Purcell's opera Dido and Æneas, or the unsurpassed Baroque hits "Ombra mai fù", from the opera Serse, and "Lascia ch’io pianga", from the opera Rinaldo, both by Georg Friedrich Händel, alongside the peace of the solo guitar in an aria by Johann Sebastian Bach and famous pieces like Santa Lucia or 'O sole mio, in a selection that offers the audience something an opera performance never aims for: beauty in concentrated form.
There is a special energy in such a concert, when the disturbing and luminous voice of the soprano transforms each score into pure emotion, and the clear chords of the guitar herald love, joy, longing, hope, youth. It's not like theater, where the spectacle is external, before our eyes, on stage; here the unleashing is internal. One emotion calls the next. One aria illuminates another, and stories unfold in everyone's heart. A maiden who sacrifices herself for love and a flower of love. A walk by the lonely poplars. A toast. A moment of adoration before the grandeur of nature. A boat trip on a sunny day. All these are glimpses of paradise that we carry within us, and music is the key that opens the gate. As Andrei Pleșu once said, "any concert hall is also a rehearsal room for angels. It is said that the body of angels is covered with eyes. In a concert hall, it is certainly covered with ears."
Soprano Cristina Fieraru is the kind of artist who shines on any poster. Young, charismatic, with a brilliant voice, diamond-like technique, and a magnetic stage presence, she has managed the feat of entering the big league of opera early and seriously. Today, she is an active presence on important stages: you'll find her at the Opera, at the Athenaeum, at a philharmonic or in a cathedral, at the Children's Comic Opera, in a chamber concert, or at a festival. Everywhere, she sings tirelessly, with the joy, light, and dedication that only total love for music can give you.
Alongside her, Maxim Belciug, this guitarist who has already become an institution, a veteran of well-tempered emotion, continues to believe, with the obstinacy we know him for, that beauty will nevertheless save the world. For more than three decades, he has been singing tirelessly, at home and abroad, as a soloist or in various chamber ensembles, always trying to make the public friends with the classical guitar and with the music that can be shared with this wonderful instrument.
The show "ARIE ȘI ECOU" (Aria and Echo), performed by soprano Cristina Fieraru together with guitarist Maxim Belciug and presented for the first time in October 2024, aims to offer the audience the opportunity to encounter the beauty and diversity of the lyrical repertoire in a presentation adapted to a small theatre stage, where the intimacy between artists and audience and the lack of directorial artifices allow for a different kind of approach – more direct, more sincere, more alive – to this timeless music.
