In the world we live in, lack of material means represents a tragedy. But there is a small category, that of homeless people, those who live on the streets, who seem to be much happier than a large part of the wealthy world. Their joy may come from the absence of all worries, needs, and absolute freedom. They can do what they want and when they want. They are not conditioned, they are not forced, they are not dissatisfied with the lack of things... they are simply happy. Or is it just an illusion? Do they also dream of wealth? They have their own grievances, smaller or larger, that is evident. But how do these manifest? We cannot know, perhaps we will never know if they have traumas weighing on their souls that push them toward such a life, or if it is a simple choice, a personal desire to live this way... We can never know...
🗽 “Beggers at the Gate of Freedom” is the story of two friends, a Hungarian and a Transylvanian, who meet in New York in an attempt to taste absolute freedom and forget the worries and disappointments of the past. Friends for nearly seven years, they go through many trials of life, more or less comical, more or less tragic. They share a bench together, they share beliefs, grievances, and joys. Encouraged by a somewhat disconnected Mexican, they desecrate some graves and even steal a corpse to receive a reward of about 20 dollars. The friendship of the two, as bizarre as it may seem in the eyes of the world, wavers after more than seven years and may even come to unravel. Around them gravitate other beggars, each with their own story contributing to a tragicomic spectacle of the world we live in. The Romanian - a Jewish Transylvanian, the Hungarian - a Catholic born and raised in Romania, represent the perfect recipe for a sincere and devoted friendship that makes them “share” beliefs and philosophies about life. Surprises arise throughout the play, the beggars seem to have their own world away from the “real” world. But, really! What is the “real” world!? Is there such a thing as absolute freedom!? Or is it just an illusion created over time?! Are they happier?! Do they have grievances about the life they live?! Do they have a future plan?! Are they doing anything to change their life, to maintain it or improve it?! These are just a few questions that come to mind now in an attempt to know and recognize their world.
