At the National Children's Palace Bucharest (Great Hall), the classic fairy tale "The Wizard of Oz" by Frank Baum comes to life in a new stage production by director Aurelian Horațiu Bîrcă, produced by the Ambassador Musical Theater, and conceived as a musical for the whole family.
„For me, The Wizard of Oz is a story about the journey each of us takes to discover that what we are looking for is already within us. It is a show about the courage to return home – not as a place, but as a discovery of one's own identity.” - declares Aurelian Horațiu Bîrcă, director.
In this unique staging, "The Wizard of Oz" becomes a story about "returning home," more as a desire for evolution, self-discovery, and understanding the world, rather than as a destination.
With orchestral arrangements by Edward Dabrowski, nominated for the 2025 Gopo Awards for "Best Original Music," the show offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic characters, exploring their emotional dimension in depth. The Scarecrow becomes the expression of insecurity and the desire for validation, the Tin Man embodies repressed sensitivity, and the Lion reflects the fragility hidden behind the need for courage.
Through choreographic moments constructed by Cezara Blioju as true spaces of scenic confession, each character discovers their own vocation and embarks on a path of transformation that resonates equally with children's sensitivity and adults' emotional experience.
The aesthetics of the show combine animated projections with traditional theatrical elements. The set design, created by scenographer Elena Iorga, is conceived as a malleable space that fluidly transforms from a monochrome Kansas into an intensely colorful world, animated through ensemble choreographies and musical interventions.
"The Wizard of Oz" symbolizes the promise that the answers lie outside of us - a necessary illusion to begin the journey on the path of self-discovery. Throughout the performance, the broader message is revealed: "home" is not just a place, but the certainty that what we seek already exists within us. The show thus becomes a story about the courage to follow one's own path.
