"ION DACIAN" NATIONAL THEATRE OF OPERETTA AND MUSICAL
THE GYPSY BARON
November 13, 2026, 7:00 PM
"The Gypsy Baron" is a three-act operetta by Johann Strauss II, with a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer. The premiere took place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna on October 24, 1885. In Romania, the operetta was first performed at the National Theatre in Bucharest on January 9, 1890.
The action takes place in the first half of the 18th century, on the once-flourishing estates of the exiled Barinkay. The castle is now a ruin; the neighbor Zsupan, a former pig farmer, prospers by exploiting Barinkay's properties. An imperial amnesty brings young Sandor Barinkay (the son of the exiled one) to the forefront, returning home to be reinstated. Aware that he must account for the plunder, Zsupan proposes that Barinkay marry his daughter. However, the young man is fascinated by the beauty of the gypsy Saffi, whom he meets at night in the abandoned castle. Returning from the fair, the gypsies acclaim the master's son as their voivode... The action continues and becomes complicated with intrigues, love, war, and a victorious return. The happy ending finds Sandor next to Saffi and his "subjects" who have chosen him voivode.
About the National Operetta and Musical Theatre "Ion Dacian"
The National Operetta and Musical Theatre "Ion Dacian" was founded in 1950 under the name State Operetta Theatre. The theatre bears the name of the famous tenor Ion Dacian, whose long career is associated with the Golden Age of Romanian operetta.
From its beginnings, Operetta has enjoyed a favorable reception from the Romanian public, the genre knowing particular popularity especially in the period of the '70s – '80s.
In the new millennium, the Theatre underwent a period of renewal and modernization. The changes mainly concerned the increase in the artistic and technical quality of productions, attracting new categories of public (especially young audiences) and shaping a new image of the Operetta, which would illustrate both its rich tradition and its new future projects, meant to transform the Theatre into an important cultural center of the Capital.
The current repertoire of the "Ion Dacian" National Operetta and Musical Theatre includes musicals, operettas, concerts, gala events, as well as seasonal performances.
