MEDA TOPÎRCEANU brings Maria Tănase's voice back on stage
Mezzo-soprano Meda Topîrceanu, a complex personality of the Romanian artistic world, known both as an actress and as a performer and television personality, invites the audience to a concert that brings the perfume of interwar elegance to the stage, dedicated to Maria Tănase: "With love MT - Open letter to Maria Tănase".
Through this performance, Meda Topîrceanu brings to life the folk music from the interwar period, reinterpreting with sensitivity and authenticity the incomparable Maria Tănase's songs. The concert's atmosphere is completed by the Constantin Mirea Quartet, in which violinist Constantin Mirea Jr. stands out, the grandson of the legendary violinist and conductor Constantin Mirea, who accompanied Maria Tănase. In an emotional note, Constantin Mirea Jr. will even play the violin that accompanied the famous artist.
The arrangements and orchestrations are signed by Ioan Dobrinescu, one of the most important contemporary composers, who reinterprets folk music with refinement, bringing a fresh and modern air to the traditional repertoire, while keeping intact the authentic essence of Romanian roots.
"We must be aware of the traditions that Romania has and of their success. Maria Tănase, who sang in Paris, New York, and Istanbul, was a world star in her time, ascending the greatest stages. She managed to combine tradition with elegance," declares Meda Topîrceanu, the great-granddaughter of the poet George Topîrceanu. "Maria Tănase is one of the living roots of Romanian cultural heritage. My wish is to bring back on stage the perfume of Maria from yesteryear, who carved her dreams through a pure life and built an unparalleled treasure with her voice."
The entire concert, including the scenography, is designed as a letter addressed to Maria Tănase, offering the audience a unique artistic experience, in which the musical past and present meet in an unforgettable harmony.
